Sealants are made of clear or shaded plastic and are applied to the teeth to help keep them cavity-free.  They protect the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, especially the chewing surfaces of the back teeth.  Food and bacteria build up in these crevices, which can result in tooth decay.  The sealant reduces the risk of decay by “sealing out” plaque and food.
